How to solve the biggest problems with packing to move home

04 Aug 2014 How to solve the biggest problems with packing to move home

We get lots of enquiries about the best way to pack for your big house move. We understand, especially if it is your first house move, that packing all your household belongings may seem like a daunting task.

With this in mind, we would like to share the benefit of our years of experience on how to successfully prepare to pack for moving home.

The Three P’s are the keys to success

Preparation, preparation, preparation! Before you even put a plate into a box, think about all the smaller items you have that you will need to pack. Do you have fragile items that need careful wrapping or furniture that requires dismantling in advance? Make sure you have all the right materials for the job. We provide high quality packing materials such as removal boxes, tape and packing paper, as well as boxes for screws and keys – all perfect for keeping your possessions safe.

Clear out before you move out

It is best to have a clear out and get rid of the things you don’t want, rather than transferring them to your new home. Follow our six top tips to clear your home of clutter before you get packing.

Packing action plan

Start at the top of the house with bedrooms and bathrooms then work your way down. Allow plenty of time as finding souvenirs or old photos in the loft may take up hours of reminiscing, rather than wrapping. Make sure you have a marker pen handy to clearly label boxes with the contents and state which room the contents will belong to, as this will make unpacking easier.

Our managing director, Tim Aspey shared his top tip for packing: “Many people pack up all of their belongings and then when they get to their new home, cannot find the box with the kettle in to make a cup of tea!

“It’s a good idea to have a ‘first day in our new home’ box.  This way you can keep items like mugs, tea, coffee, toiletries, plates, and a first aid kit handy and all stored together.”

Need a helping hand?

Don’t feel that you have to do all of the packing yourself.  Share the job and ask friends and family to help or someone who has been through a house move themselves. You may feel confident packing most items, but if you are concerned about how best to wrap fragile belongings we can pack these for you or better yet, pack everything for you for a complete stress-free experience.

Tim says: “Another handy tip when packaging electrical goods, such as a TV or food processor, is to use the boxes they came in.

“Often, people store these boxes in the loft or garage and forget about them but at least you know they will be the perfect fit for packaging.

“Oh and lastly but importantly, I’d recommend packing a bottle of champagne and a local takeaway menu in your essential items box to celebrate moving into your new home!”

Buy yourself complete peace of mind

Even with the most careful packing, during a house move accidents can happen and something valuable could be broken. We recommend that you buy comprehensive insurance to cover you for any damage to your valuables during your move.
