Our guide to selling in summer

19 Jul 2017 Our guide to selling in summer

There is plenty of debate about when the best time is to sell your home, but the fact is that many people choose to put their property on the market during the summer.

With so many potential distractions during the warmer weather and holiday period, you can be reassured that anyone taking the time to view your property is seriously considering a purchase.

But with such a competitive market, what can you do to make your home more appealing? Our 40 years of home removals experience has taught us a few tips and tricks which we’re more than happy to share with you.

Prune, trim and strim

The property market is a jungle. Don’t let the same be said for your garden. Buyers’ first impressions are often the website, the second is when they park up outside your home. Create real kerb appeal by making sure hedges are trimmed, plants are pruned, and your lawn looks in better condition than Centre Court at Wimbledon!  If gardening isn't your thing then it really is worth investing in a few hours' time of a local gardener.  Also tidy the exterior of your home if required – a lick of paint goes a long way.

Let the light in

Drop the drapes and ditch the dark colours in favour of more neutral or lighter tones. Buyers coming into dark properties will be instantly put off and will be looking for the door. Neutral or lighter colours are also more inviting and make it easier for people to visualise how they would decorate their would-be new home.

Keep it clean

It sounds obvious, but letting chores get out of hand is the easiest way to put off buyers. Make sure your home stays spick and span.

Keep your cool

In just the same way that a dark home will make buyers long to get out into the sun, if your home is too hot people will just make an excuse to leave quickly. Make your home more inviting by keeping it well-ventilated, along with using fragrant fresh flowers to avoid any undesirable smells such as waste bins which can be worsened in the warm weather.

Add some sparkle to your kitchen

The kitchen is always a major selling point in property purchases, so add some sparkle to create greater appeal.

Perhaps kitchen cabinets could do with sprucing up with either a touch of paint or new handles? Introducing more shiny metals also creates a shimmery, summery atmosphere – pots, pans, vases and picture frames, the choice is yours!

The great outdoors

Use the warmer weather to your advantage - make sure your garden sells a calm and relaxing lifestyle in your home. Keep your patio or decking clean and tidy, and if your garden furniture is in good condition why not invite your buyers to take a seat and relax with a cool drink, picturing themselves enjoying long hot summers in your garden.

Clear out the clutter

It’s amazing how many of us still have winter coats, boots and clothing cluttering up our homes throughout the summer.

Yet the best way to sell our homes is to create an inviting space which buyers can imagine putting their own unique mark on, and clearing out the clutter is the best way to do this.

Put non-essential items into storage. If you don’t have attic space or room to store things tidily, why not try short-term containerised storage? Andrew Porter Limited offers cost-effective containerised storage, and our crews will even collect your items from your home and deliver them back to you when you need them – hopefully to your new home!
