The BBC’s Antiques Roadshow is back on tour, travelling the length and breadth of the UK looking for those top finds!
Members of the public queue up after scouring their attics and cellars for treasured possessions in the hope that they may strike it lucky and receive a valuation that means they can start retirement early. Have you ever wondered, though, how people actually get their potentially priceless items to the show itself? Transporting an ornament or piece of jewellery is a doddle, but how about bringing a grand piano or piece of antique furniture?
The programme makers do say they can offer some assistance transporting difficult items, but whether you are attending a valuation, or simply moving home, how do you ensure your cherished vintage items stay in perfect condition? One wrong move and your irreplaceable treasure could turn into fragments.
With over 40 year’s experience in carefully transporting antiques and fine art, Andrew Porter Limited has the expertise to carry out this process with the utmost care.
Here, managing director, Tim Aspey, shares his top tips in moving valuable possessions.
“It always surprises me that people will take great care when personally handling a much loved antique, but may cut corners when it comes to third party transportation costs, which is where scratches and snags can commonly occur.
“There are some practical things you can do yourself to ensure your prized items remain in perfect condition, whether relocating them or not,” he says.
Do your research. Find a removal company that specialises or has extensive experience in moving antique furniture and fine art. A good value for money option is to look at part load removals, perfect for transporting an item for valuation or to an auction.
Invest in a pair of white cotton gloves and wear them when handling your precious pieces. This prevents damage which can be caused by the oily residue from your skin sticking to the item.
Keeping temperature consistent is vital for antiques. Vintage items should be stored in a clean, dry space. Damp areas, such as basements or sheds, and warm places, like lofts or attics, should be avoided. A good removals company will be able to offer storage facilities suitable for antiques and valuables.
Even if you are heading over to the Antiques Roadshow, resist the urge to apply polish or have your valuable item restored beforehand. Doing this before transportation of your treasure may result in the packing materials sticking to the surface.
Lastly, but importantly, give yourself complete peace of mind and take out insurance to cover you for any damage of your valued possession during the move.
The team at Andrew Porter Limited receive specialist training and practice moving objects such as grand pianos, grandfather clocks and pieces of fine art in its purpose built in-house training centre.
